The turbulent history has brought with it the complex and pacifying religion which is very much the part of life for Tibetans. Despite all its outward Chinese trapping, Tibetan lifestyle still survives. Prior to the 1950s, Tibet was a realm apart. The only foreigners who had visited were a tiny number of missionaries, explorers and British military force making a brief incursion to wave the flag. Although these visitors gained admittance with varying degrees of success, they were all in awe of the rigours of travel in Tibet.
