Adventure travel in Nepal requires you to have an adequate travel insurance policy failure to which you are excluded from various activities. Coverage on most travel insurance varies from policy to policy but will probably include loss or damage of baggage, sickness and accidental injury or death. While these inexpensive protection are adequate for normal travel, any adventure based activity requires clients to have search & rescue insurance. If you are injured and unable to travel, you can be assisted by a rescue helicopter or a charter flight from a remote airstrip only if you have a definite proof you can pay for it. The cost of a helicopter evacuation is more than US$ 2500 anywhere near Everest region and up to US$ 5000 for a rescue from the far west of Nepal. Helicopter operators won’t respond to an emergency unless they have cash at hand, most organizations have an agreement that guarantees payment for helicopter evacuations. They pay a cash deposit to the helicopter operator and collect the money from you upon your rescue. It is then up to you to obtain reimbursement from your insurance company so be sure that your insurance covers rescue by helicopter.
You must bring your policy document with you. The documentation must state in writing the named policy holder, cover period of the policy, 24 hour contact telephone of your insurance company and your policy number.
Insurance policies can also be bought locally in Kathmandu, some of which cover trekking and mountain rescue. However, the time in settling claim can be difficult so it’s recommended that you have an adequate policy from home. |
